Meet Our Luthier – Dr. Mike Liu
A Musician's Understanding. A Luthier's Precision.
Dr. Mike Liu brings together a background in professional classical music performance, traditional violin making, antique European violin restoration, and more than 20 years of hands-on experience in string instrument repair and restoration.
Born into a family of musicians, Dr. Liu began his musical studies at an early age and pursued advanced musical education in Russia and the United States.
His professional education, training, and affiliations include:
Doctor of Musical Arts in Cello Performance – St. Petersburg Conservatory, Russia
Artist Diploma – Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, USA
Antique European Violin Restoration Studies – St. Petersburg Conservatory, Russia
Violin Making Studies – Chicago School of Violin Making, USA
Hands-On Violin Making Training – Shanghai Violin Factory, China
Member – The Violin Society of America (VSA)
As both a professional cellist and an experienced luthier, Dr. Liu understands instruments from two important perspectives: how they are made and how they respond in the hands of a musician.
This combination of musical knowledge, traditional violin-making training, and specialized restoration experience guides his approach to repairs, restorations, instrument setup, and sound adjustments.
His goal is to help each instrument achieve its best possible tone, playability, and performance.
