About Our Luthier – Dr. Mike Liu
A Musician's Understanding. A Luthier's Precision.
Professional Cellist | Luthier | Member of The Violin Society of America (VSA)
Dr. Mike Liu brings together a distinguished background in classical music performance, traditional violin-making training, antique European violin restoration studies, and more than 20 years of professional string instrument repair and restoration experience.
Born into a family of musicians, Dr. Liu began studying classical music at an early age. His musical education includes studies in Russia, including at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, where he also studied the restoration of antique European violins.
In addition to his musical training, Dr. Liu pursued traditional violin-making studies at the Chicago School of Violin Making in the United States and received hands-on violin-making training at the Shanghai Violin Factory in China.
His professional education and training combine the musical perspective of a performing cellist with the technical knowledge of instrument construction, restoration, and tonal adjustment.
